All of us have special events or moments in time when we seem to see beyond the usual. Spiritual lightning strikes us, the ground quakes and our palms sweat. These events may be life at its most powerful, when we lose ourselves in a vision--a realization--and we give way to our emotions. It is about these mountain top moments of communion that I paint. These are the times of my greatest awareness and happiness. The arts may have been invented to record these inspirational moments that have occurred to artists throughout the ages.
The humble thrust of my paintings is to capture the essence of profound moments. I try for powerful, bold paintings that can, it is hoped, galvanize viewers and share with them. My paintings are my spirit's attempt to capture what, to me, has meaning and is beautiful.
I work in watercolors, oils and pastels. Each has its own characteristics, and each causes me to paint with different parameters, techniques and goals. I wish to show things as I imagine they could be.
A scenic designer for 30 years, I retrained as a painter with Frank Webb,
Pat San Souci, Chen Kee Chee and Al Chrisopher. I have painted from locations all over the world, including
a barge tripdown the Ohio River and back.
My works have won local, national and international awards. Recently I had the chance to design the last movement of
the symphony, Pictures in an Exhibition. While the last movement, The Great Gates of Kiev
was played by the Atlantic Symphony Orchestra, my painting was shown on a screen behind the orchestra.
The last movement is full of chimes, bells and drums. It was quite explosive and an artistic thrill
to capture it on paper and to see my efforts projected while the huge orchestra played flat-out
to fulfill the demands of the music.
